Spanish Teaching Methodology

We have developed a highly effective and engaging approach to teaching Spanish that has come from over 30 years of experience . Our system, however, is not dated. We have made a constant effort to keep up-to-date on the latest teaching methods and materials, incorporating them into our system and perfecting our student experience through years of trial and adaptation. At each of the eight levels on offer, we focus on all the important elements of language acquisition; reading, writing, vocabulary development, audition, pronunciation, and (most importantly) the art of speaking Spanish.

At Tecún Umán, the system of teaching Spanish is total immersion. Total immersion is the most efficient manner for each student to realize his or her objectives. This method allows the student to learn the language more quickly and thoroughly than in a classroom. That each student is paired with their own teacher (one-on-one) allows the development of a good working relationship and a groove of communication to be built. Students will think, listen, and speak in Spanish for a period of 4, 5 or 6 hours per day.

 In a 4 hour course, about one third of the time is spent teaching our students new grammatical concepts and rules, with the remaining time devoted to practicing and perfecting these structures with
a variety of activities.

To make students feel comfortable speaking, we use highly interactive and communicative activities such as role-playing, games, structured and guided conversations, and much more . We have chosen these activities with a student´s total communicative progress in mind, while also wishing that the student has a little fun while studying. This structured approach ensures that our students make steady improvement , each level building on the last.

Though we offer this structure, we are always ready to accommodate a student´s particular needs and desires. If a student feels the need to spend more time on a particular grammatical concept, we are glad to help. At the end of the course, whether you have studied for one week or 6 months, we seek your feedback through a carefully designed questionnaire.
